On her way home from work last week, she stopped at the shop and met an acquaintance who, looking at her scrubs, said she didn’t realise Caitlin was ‘just a nurse’.

In a post on Facebook, Caitlin said she’d heard that phrase many times over her 18-year career, yet this time, it got to her.

“Am I just a nurse?” she wrote.

I have helped babies into the world, many of whom needed assistance to take their first breath, and yet I am just a nurse.

I have performed CPR on patients and brought them back to life, and yet I am just a nurse.

I will miss Christmas Days, my children’s birthdays, and school musicals to come to work to care for your loved one, and yet I am just a nurse.

“So, if I am just a nurse, then I’m ridiculously proud to be one!” she concluded.

Her post has received thousands of likes and shares – as well as tons of support from other nurses and people who just appreciate what they do:

She told Buzzfeed that she knows ‘just a nurse’ is more often than not a throwaway comment, and that was really the whole point of her post.

“I think it’s also about all of those people, be they teachers, mums, or shop keepers, who feel diminished and undervalued in their jobs and roles.”

I would really like…those people that do feel undervalued to make themselves a coffee and read through the comments. These responses are not just for me personally – they are for all nurses!
